That's what I had been doing for an entire game. Almost sixty minutes of hard hits, creating havoc in front of the net and playing better than I ever had before.
I was tired, but I wasn't exhausted like I was a year ago. I could still skate for another period if I needed to, my legs were still solid beneath me, my lungs weren't burning. I felt good.
I felt like the best.
I was rotating out, sitting on the bench, sweat sticking to places I didn't think sweat could stick, my cheeks flush and Gatorade coasting down my throat as I squirt the liquid into my mouth.
I watch as Nico zooms past our bench, puck in his possession. There were around three minutes left in this game, we were hanging on by a flimsy 2-1 lead and I wasn't comfortable with us being only up by one.
Carolina's defense was solid tonight, both team's defensive side of the puck was tough. It's what made this such a good game.
My rotation was coming up, so I stood from my spot, ready to hop onto the ice and pick up where I'd left off.
The current defense doesn't get the puck deep enough for Nico and Sanders, and I watch the turnover happen in almost slow motion.
Two forwards for Carolina wait deep for the pass, receiving it flawlessly leaving no time for anyone to get back in time to defend them, just them and free ice.
I blast from the bench, my skates almost moving faster than the rest of my body. Digging the heels of my blades into the ice, pumping my arms forward to catch up with the two in front of me.
Now or never.
You're either the one they tell stories about or a guy who warmed the bench.
That's it.
They pass it back and forth, closing in front of Kai who is watching them like a hawk ready to make a save.
I watch the guy to my left, pull back to pass, and I take the chance.
I dive forward, lying on the ice, extending my stick in front of me to block the pass. The black biscuit hits my stick loudly, meaning I've succeeded in derailing the two on nothing.
The momentum of my body sends me flying into the net next to Kai. It dislodges from its position causing the refs to blow their whistle signaling the end of the play.
There is a stinging pain in my ear, and I pull my glove off to check and make sure it's still there. A little blood is stuck to two of my fingers and I look at Kai from my spot on the ice.
"You cut me, jackass." I signal to the blade of his skate.
"You're the one who came into my net. You'll think about that next time you wanna be a hero." He shrugs, helping me up and out of his space.
I chuckle, winking playfully. "It was a pretty slick play though."
He just rolls his eyes as the rest of the team slaps my back congratulating me on my hustle.
